Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday. First day of The Lenten journey. A walk towards Easter through the valley of the shadow; or a relinquishing: dead leaves on a tree that won’t bloom again;leaves that need shed if anything new is ever again to bud.

Each of the 40 days I’ll post some of the bread I’m taking with me, for any companions who want to share the journey.

Today this is the bread I take from my satchel. It’s words from TS Elliot’s poem Ash Wednesday. These are words to carry today:

And pray to God to have mercy upon us
And pray that I may forget
These matters that with myself I too much discuss
Too much explain
Because I do not hope to turn again
Let these words answer
For what is done, not to be done again
May the judgement not be too heavy upon us……

Teach us to care and not to care
Teach us to sit still
